Control of Key Rank

Control of Key Rank

You Control a Key Rank when your Rook or Queen controls an important row on the chessboard. Controlling a key rank allows you to restrict the opponent's piece movements, exert pressure on key squares, and create strong attacking or defensive positions. In the diagram above, White's Rook controls the 3rd rank and prevents the advance of both Black's King and pawn.

Ideas for when you control a Key Rank: (1) Exploit weaknesses in your opponent's pawn structure along the rank, (2) Restrict your opponent’s piece movements. Ideas for when you play against the control of a Key Rank: (1) Strengthen the defense of pawns and pieces targeted along the rank, (2) Contest the rank using your Rook, (3) Seek exchanges that reduce opponent’s control of the key rank.
