Queen's Pawn Opening
Openings where White starts with 1.d4 are known as Queen's Pawn Openings and they set the stage for a type of play that is often positional in nature.
The most frequent continuations are the Indian Defense (1...Nf6) and the Closed Game (1...d5). Sometimes Black allows White to gain control of the center and plays the Horwitz Defense (1...e6), different setups with (1...d6) or the Modern Defense (1...g6). Other common responses for Black are the Dutch Defense (1...f5, fighting for the center) and the Old Benoni Defense (1...c5).
