Greek Gift

Greek Gift

The Greek Gift is a tactical maneuver where you sacrifice a Bishop by capturing a pawn on h7 (or h2 if you play as Black). The goal is to launch a powerful attack against the opponent's castled King, aiming for checkmate or significant material gain. In the diagram above, White played 1.Bxh7+ leading to the mostly forced continuation: 1...Kxh7 2.Qh5+ Kg8 3.Ng5 Re8 4.Qxf7+ Kh8 5.Qh5+ Kg8 6.Qh7+ Kf8 7.Qh8+ Ke7 8.Qxg7#

When playing a Greek Gift Sacrifice: (1) Ensure that your Queen and Knight can quickly join the attack. Against a Greek Gift Sacrifice: (1) Consider declining the sacrifice and playing a defensive move.
