Desperado

Desperado

A Desperado is a piece that is about to be captured and manages to create a favorable situation with an aggressive last move. In the first diagram above, White's c4-Bishop seems doomed, but with the desperado move 1.Bg8, it is able to turn the tables around and give White the victory.

Desperado is also a term used for a piece that sacrifices itself to achieve a stalemate. In the second diagram above, 1.Qb3+ saves White from a loss.
