Stalemate

Stalemate

A Stalemate is a situation where the player whose turn it is to move has no legal moves available, and their King is not in check. When stalemate occurs, the game immediately ends in a draw. This situation typically arises in endgames where one side has a significant material advantage but fails to leave either safe squares for the opponent's King or legal moves for their remaining pieces.

In the diagram above, Black is much better, but the position of Black's Queen allows White to play a last-minute swindle: 1.Ra8+! and Black's King is forced to capture the Rook. The only remaining White piece on the board is the King, but it has no legal moves. The game is a draw by stalemate.
