Chess Patterns ❯ King Techniques ❯ King Inside the Square
King Inside the Square
King Inside the Square
The Square of the Pawn is an imaginary square whose defining corners are the pawn's current position and its promotion square. If the defending King can enter this square, it can catch and stop the pawn before it promotes. This method is crucial for evaluating whether a passed pawn can be stopped in King and pawn endgames.
In the diagram above, White can draw the game by immediately entering the square of the a4-pawn with 1.Kd4. The game might continue with: 1...a3 2.Kc3 a2 3.Kb2 a1=Q, and White captures the pawn just in time to draw: 4.Kxa1.
