Perpetual Check

Perpetual Check

A Perpetual Check is a situation where one player can continuously give checks to the opponent's King, and the opponent has no way to escape the checks or stop them. This usually forces a draw, as the player giving the checks can continue indefinitely, preventing the opponent from making progress. Perpetual check is often used as a defensive resource when a player is in a worse position, allowing them to obtain a draw instead of a loss.

In the diagram above, Black is much better, but the weak position of Black's King allows White to salvage a last-minute draw with a perpetual check: 1.Qe8+ and Black is forced in the loop 1...Kh7 2.Qh5+ Kg8 3.Qe8+ Kh7 4.Qh5+ Kg8.
