Problematic King

Problematic King

A Problematic King is a King that's exposed to attack and/or lacks sufficient defense. This weakness can lead to checkmate or loss of material. It is a signal of tactical possibilities. In the diagram above, White noticed Black's lack of cover and found the winning tactic: 1.Qa5+ Kb8 2.Qb5+ Kc7 3.Qxe8.

Ideas for when your opponent has a Problematic King: (1) Look for tactics that exploit weak squares or exposed pieces aligned with the King, (2) Open lines of attack by advancing pawns or sacrificing material. Ideas for when you have a Problematic King: (1) Prevent tactics involving pieces aligned with your King, (2) Improve the King's position, (3) Trade pieces, especially Queens, to limit the attacking potential, (4) Create counterplay.
