Chess Patterns ❯ Signals and Clues ❯ Promising Alignments
Promising Alignments
Promising Alignments
A Promising Alignment exists when your pieces are lined up in an advantageous way with your opponent's pieces or with important squares. It is a signal of tactical possibilities. In the diagram above, the alignment between White's g2-Bishop and Black's pieces allows for 1.Ne1, picking up the undefended b7-Bishop in the next move.
Ideas for when you spot a Promising Alignment: (1) Look for tactics that exploit weak squares or exposed pieces aligned with your pieces, (2) Don't rush: double-check your calculations, (3) Be aware of counter-attacks. Ideas against an Unfavorable Alignment: (1) Try to prevent tactics that exploit any weak squares or exposed pieces, (2) Break up your opponent's piece coordination.
