Pieces with Weak Protection
A Piece with Weak Protection is a piece that is either completely undefended or that lacks sufficient support from other pieces. It is a signal of tactical possibilities. In the diagram above, White can play 1.Qe4, attacking at the same time the undefended b7-Rook and the vulnerable h7-pawn.
Ideas for when your opponent has Weakly Protected Pieces: (1) Look for tactics that exploit their vulnerable condition, (2) Maintain pressure on them to restrict your opponent's options, (3) Make them more vulnerable by eliminating or removing their defenders. Ideas for when you have Weakly Protected Pieces: (1) Strengthen their defenses, (2) Reposition them in a less vulnerable location.
