Capture the Defender

Capture the Defender

Capture the Defender is a chess tactic in which you remove a piece that is defending an important square or piece, making it easier to launch an attack or gain material advantage. This tactic is also called Removing the Guard. In the diagram above, White can play 1.Qxc3 to remove the defender of the important f6 square. If Black recaptures, 2.Nf6+ wins immediately.

When Capturing an Important Defender: (1) Be mindful of counterattacks and in-between moves. Against a "Capture the Defender" Tactic: (1) Increase the support to the piece protected by the threatened defender.
