Minority Attack

Minority Attack

A Minority Attack is a strategic maneuver where a player advances a smaller number of pawns (usually two) against a larger number of the opponent’s pawns (usually three). The purpose is to create weaknesses in the opponent's pawn structure, such as isolated or backward pawns. In the diagram above, White starts the minority attack with 1.b4, which later will be followed by an a2-a4 push and further advances.

Ideas for when you are starting a Minority Attack: (1) Ensure your pieces can support the advancing pawns, (2) Time your pawn push carefully. Ideas against a Minority Attack: (1) Create counterplay on the opposite side of the board or in the center.
