Pawn Breakthrough

Pawn Breakthrough

A Pawn Breakthrough is a maneuver in which one or more pawns are advanced and sacrificed to create a decisive opening in the opponent's position. This tactic often results in the creation of a clear path to promote to a Queen. In the diagram above, White breaks through with 1.g6. Black cannot stop all the pawns; for instance: 1...fxg6 2.h6 gxh6 3.f6 and White promotes.

When starting a Pawn Breakthrough: (1) Calculate all possible captures and exchanges thoroughly before committing. Against a Pawn Breakthrough: (1) Consider counter-attacking to divert your opponent's attention.
