Wedge Pawn

Wedge Pawn

A Wedge Pawn is a pawn that has advanced to the sixth rank (or third rank from the opponent's perspective). This advanced pawn exerts significant pressure on the opponent's position, often restricting their piece movement (as shown in the diagram above). The pawn acts like a "wedge" driven deep into enemy territory, potentially splitting the opponent's position and serving as a springboard for further attacks.

Ideas for when you have a Wedge Pawn: (1) Protect the pawn with other pieces to maintain positional pressure, (2) Exploit any open lines and create an attack involving the pawn. Ideas against a Wedge Pawn: (1) Exchange pieces to reduce the attacking potential of the wedge, (2) Consider tactical opportunities to capture or eliminate the pawn.
