Chess Patterns ❯ Condition of Kings ❯ King Not Yet Castled
King Not Yet Castled
King Not Yet Castled
A King Not Yet Castled is a King that is still in the center and thus is more vulnerable to attacks by the opponent's pieces. Getting the King to safety through castling is usually a priority in the opening and early middlegame. In the diagram above, Black's King has not yet castled and is about to be under a lot of pressure from White's pieces.
Ideas for when you play against a King not yet Castled: (1) Open the center to expose the opponent’s King, (2) Develop your pieces quickly to create threats, (3) Prevent your opponent from castling by controlling key squares, (4) Consider sacrificial tactics. Ideas for when you have a King not yet Castled: (1) Castle as soon as it is safe to do so, (2) Avoid opening the center prematurely, (3) Defend against early attacks, (4) Look for counter-attacks.
