King with a Weak Cover

King with a Weak Cover

A King with a Weak Cover is a King that lacks sufficient pawn protection. This can occur because the pawns in front of the King have advanced, or because they have been exchanged. In the diagram above, Black's g- and h- pawns have been pushed too far, greatly exposing their King to possible threats.

Ideas against a King with a Weak Cover: (1) Bring your pieces to active positions to launch an attack, (2) Look for tactical blows, sacrifices, etc., (3) Open files and diagonals leading to the opponent’s King, (4) Avoid unnecessary exchanges that might relieve the pressure. Ideas for when you have a King with a Weak Cover: (1) Reposition nearby pieces for defense, (2) Trade off your opponent's attacking pieces, (3) Create escape squares, (4) Move it to a more secure position.
