Pawn Islands

Pawn Islands

Pawn Island is a group of pawns separated from other pawn groups by files with no friendly pawns. Having more pawn islands is often a weakness, as it can create vulnerabilities and limit pawn mobility. In the diagram above, the fact that Black has three pawn islands while White has just two gives White easier targets.

Ideas for when you have fewer Pawn Islands than your opponent: (1) Look for weaknesses such as isolated or backward pawns, (2) Advance your pawns as a unit, maintaining coordination. Ideas for when you have more Pawn Islands than your opponent: (1) Exchange pawns or pieces in a way that reduces your number of pawn islands, (2) Use your King to support your weaker pawn groups in the endgame.
