In many positions, an Advanced Passed Pawn may be a powerful advantage (as shown in the first diagram above) because it poses a constant promotion threat, forcing the opponent to divert resources to stop it.

In other positions, an Advanced Passed Pawn may be a weakness because its advanced position can make it very difficult to protect (as shown in the second diagram above).
