Outside Passed Pawn

Outside Passed Pawn

An Outside Passed Pawn, also known as a Distant Passed Pawn, is a passed pawn located at the margins of the board. It can be a powerful advantage (as shown in the diagram above) because it can distract the opponent's pieces and King, creating opportunities to dominate the other side of the board.

Ideas for when you have an Outside Passed Pawn: (1) Use it to draw the opponent's pieces away from the center and other key areas, (2) Combine the threat of the passed pawn with attacks on other parts of the board. Ideas against an Outside Passed Pawn: (1) Keep the heavy pieces on the board, as they can more easily blockade and attack the pawn at the same time, (2) Maintain your King in a central position.
