Connected Passed Pawns

Connected Passed Pawns

We call Connected Passed Pawns two or more passed pawns on adjacent files that support each other. This mutual support makes increases their chances of promotion, and makes it very difficult for the opponent to blockade them. In the diagram above, White is down the exchange but has two strong connected passed pawns that give him great chances.

Ideas for when you have Connected Passed Pawns: (1) In the middlegame, don't rush their advance, first prevent any counterplay, (2) In the endgame, advance them toward promotion. Ideas against Connected Passed Pawns: (1) Try to blockade them, preferably with a Knight or a Bishop, (2) If blockading them is impossible, create counterplay on another side of the board.
