Knight's Pawn

Knight's Pawn

In some endgames, a Knight's Pawn may be an advantage, as it can grant unique winning opportunities that other pawns might not. In the first diagram above, for example, White’s pawn’s proximity to the right edge ensures that Black’s Knight won’t be able to perpetually check White’s King.

In other endgames, a Knight's Pawn may be a weakness, as it can be more difficult to promote compared to other pawns. In the second diagram above, White easily prevents Black from queening with: 1.Rf1 Rb2+ 2.Ka1 Ra2+ 3.Kb1, resulting in no progress.
