Chess Patterns ❯ Condition of Rooks and Queens ❯ Connected Rooks
Connected Rooks
Connected Rooks
We call Connected Rooks two Rooks that are placed on the same rank or file with no other pieces between them. Connected Rooks are particularly strong on open files and on the 7th rank. They are powerful because they defend each other, and coordinate their actions effectively. In the diagram above, for example, the fact that White's Rooks are connected ensures that the opponent's King and Queen never pose a real threat.
Ideas for when you have Connected Rooks: (1) Place your Connected Rooks on open files or on the 7th rank to maximize their influence, (2) Coordinate with other pieces. Ideas against your opponent's Connected Rooks: (1) Disrupt the connection by forcing one Rook to move or by placing a piece between them, (2) Exchange one of the Rooks.
