Strong Queen

Strong Queen

A Strong Queen has several of these features: it controls key squares in the center and in the opponent's half of the board, has good mobility, is well-coordinated with other pieces, is placed on a strong support point. In the diagram above, the Queen on d4 effectively dominates all sides of the board.

Ideas for when you have a Strong Queen: (1) Control the center of the board and dominate the opponent's pieces, (2) Use its mobility to create threats, (3) Avoid exposing it to unnecessary risks, (4) Coordinate it with your other pieces to launch effective attacks. Ideas against a Strong Queen: (1) Limit its mobility by controlling key squares and blocking its potential lines of attack, (2) Exchange it for your Queen or for some of your pieces, (3) Maintain good piece coordination, aiming at creating counterplay.
