Strong Rook

Strong Rook

A Strong Rook has several of these features: controls a key half-open file, file or rank, has good mobility (Rooks are best in open positions), is well-coordinated with other pieces (Rooks can create formidable batteries), is securely placed deep in the opponent's camp (rooks on the seventh rank can create formidable threats). In the diagram above, for example, the strong d8-Rook exerts great pressure on Black's position in coordination with the g5-Knight.

Ideas for when you have a Strong Rook: (1) Coordinate it with other pieces to launch effective attacks, (2) Avoid exposing it to unnecessary risks. Ideas against a Strong Rook: (1) Use your pawns to limit its mobility, (2) Exchange the Rook for one of your pieces, (3) Try pinning the Rook against more valuable pieces.
