Rook Behind Passed Pawn

Rook Behind Passed Pawn

A Rook Behind a Passed Pawn is a Rook that either aids its own passed pawn from behind (supporting its advance, as shown in the diagram above) or defends against an enemy passed pawn from the rear (continuously threatening its capture). This positioning gives the Rook great flexibility, allowing it to switch files if needed.

Ideas for when you have a Rook Behind a Passed Pawn: (1) Advance your passed pawn, (2) Bring your King closer to support the Rook, (3) Create threats with your Rook on adjacent files while still supporting or threatening the pawn. Ideas against a Rook Behind a Passed Pawn: (1) Activate your King, (2) If the enemy Rook supports a passed pawn, blockade the pawn or try to deflect the Rook away.
