Drawable Pieces and Pawns Endgame

Drawable Pieces and Pawns Endgame

You have a Drawable Pieces and Pawns Endgame when, despite being at a disadvantage in a position with both pieces and pawns on the board, you can hold the game to a draw through accurate defensive play.

In the diagram above, White is a pawn down, but decides to simplify the position because of the relationship between Black's Bishop and the passed pawn. White therefore forces the trade of the Rooks with 1.Rf3. The resulting position is a well known drawn endgame where the Bishop does not control the promotion square of the passed pawn and the defending King can shelter in the unassailable corner of the board.
