Winnable Pieces and Pawns Endgame

Winnable Pieces and Pawns Endgame

You have a Winnable Pieces and Pawns Endgame when you possess a clear advantage in a position where both pieces and pawns are on the board, and you can force a win against your opponent’s best defense.

In the diagram above, White is a pawn up and decides to simplify the position by forcing the trade of the Rooks with 1.Rf3. If Black doesn't exchange on f3, White will proceed anyways with 2.Rxf6. White opts for simplification because the resulting position is a well-known winning endgame where the Bishop controls the promotion square of the passed pawn. White will soon promote the h-pawn to a Queen and go on to win the game.
