Chess Patterns ❯ Types Of Endgame ❯ Winnable Pawn Endgame
Winnable Pawn Endgame
Winnable Pawn Endgame
You have a Winnable Pawn Endgame when you possess a clear advantage in a position where only the two Kings and one or more pawns are on the board, and you can force a win against your opponent’s best defense.
In the diagram above, White is a pawn up and decides to simplify the position by forcing the trade of the Queens with 1.Qh1+. White opts for simplification because the resulting position is a well-known winning endgame, where the King ensures the promotion of its passed pawn by reaching a key square in front of the pawn. The game continued: 2.Qxb7 Kxb7 3.Ke5 Kc6 4.Ke6 and White soon promotes the d-pawn and goes on to win the game.
