Skewer

Skewer

A Skewer is a tactic in which a more valuable piece is attacked, and when it moves, a less valuable piece behind it becomes exposed to capture. In the diagram above, White can play 1.Bf4 and skewer the black Queen and Rook. If the Queen moves, the Rook will be easily captured.

Ideas for when you are Skewering two of your opponent's pieces: (1) Use the skewer to gain material or another advantage, (2) Pay attention to defensive maneuvers. Ideas against a Skewer: (1) Make a threat with one of your skewered pieces (in the diagram above, for example, 1...Qd5+ saves Queen and Rook), (2) Make a threat that allows you to remove the opponent's skewering piece.
