Windmill
Windmill
A Windmill is one of the most devastating tactics in chess because it involves a series of alternating checks and captures that are performed by the same piece, typically a Rook, in conjunction with a Bishop. In the diagram above, White can start the Windmill Attack with 1.Rxg7+ followed by Rxf7+, Rxb7+, Rxa7+ and eventually even the Black Queen falls with the final capture: Rxa3.
When delivering a Windmill Attack: (1) Consider the timing and the sequence of moves to maximize the effectiveness of your attack. Against a Windmill Attack: (1) Move the King out of the line of the coming checks, (2) Consider sacrificing a piece to break the cycle of checks.
