Vancura Position

Vancura Position

The Vancura Position, named after Czech study composer Josef Vančura, is a fundamental drawing position occurring in Rook vs. Rook and Rook's pawn endgames. The main characteristics of this position are that the opponent's pawn is two squares from promotion and the protecting Rook is in front of it. The defending player attacks the pawn from the side and keeps the King near the corner (hence the bottom-right symbol on the icon of the card). This leaves room for Rook maneuvers and avoids possible skewers from the opponent's Rook. In the diagram above, White plays 1.Rc3, ensuring that no further progress is possible for Black: as soon as Black advances the h-pawn, White will attack it from above.
